INTRODUCTION
U.S. EPA Report Oxygen Transfer Efficiency (OTE)
In aeration applications, a prime concern is maximizing the OTE at the most economical energy output. The EPA, in its 1989 design manual for fine bubble aeration systems, states that the aeration systems in activated sludge plants consume 50-90% of total plant energy requirements, and are usually the largest single cost element in operating budgets.
Quoting From The Report
“Replacement of less-efficient aeration systems with fine bubble aeration devices can save up to 50% of aeration energy cost and has resulted in typical simple payback periods of 2-6 years. As a result of these very impressive cost savings, more than 1,300 municipal and industrial wastewater treatment facilities in the United States and Canada now use fine bubble aeration”. Small differences in oxygen transfer efficiency produce substantial savings in energy cost. Therefore, maximizing diffuser OTE is the best way to reduce operating costs.
HYOTUBE SERIES 9A TUBULAR MEMBRANE DIFFUSER
The Hyotube Diffuser was specifically developed for enhancing the efficiency and operating modles of the activated sludge processes for wastewater biological treatment. The design of the membrane tubing prohibits clogging of the aeration pores which are self closing when air flow/pressure is interrupted. With Ecologix’s mounting kit, most existing diffused air systems can be easily retrofitted using the Hyotube diffuser.
Advantages
- High oxygen transfer rate
- Reliable intermittent aeration applications
- Low energy consumption
- Nitrification/Denitrification
- Long life expectancy
- Simple installation procedures

ECOFLEX™-520CV FINE BUBBLE DISC DIFFUSER
The Ecoflex-520CV diffusers were developed specifically for use in the water and wastewater industry. The disc diffusers are simple and sturdy. An upwardly convex dish is covered by an EPDM membrane which encompasses the rim of the dish and perforated ” I ” slits. The membrane is fastened to the dish with AISI 316 stainless steel retaining ring with an integral adjustment screw for fastening. The specially designed non-return valve is to prevent the backflow white the air-off and interruption process. Because of their larger size compared to others, fewer Ecoflex-520V diffusers are needed, to reduceing both installation and maintenance costs.
